Founded in 1977 in San Francisco, CA, CPW has long been defined for its committment to innovations in both design and methods of construction, while offering a line of benchmark products in both Landscape and Home Furnishings.

A graduate of Southern Illinois University in 1973, Charles studied both Architecture and later, Design, in a department headed by Buckminster Fuller. 

Apprenticing since childhood in a family of home builders, woodworkers, architects, and artist/illustrators, Charles founded CPW at 27 as a format for artistic expression and structural innovations.  As a means to earn a living that is drawn by both purpose and a self-perpetuating absorption  until one day, perhaps well into his 90's, a life well lived comes to an end in a pile of soft accepting sawdust.

But the continuum remains, in the form of his youngest son Ben, drawn to the shop since he was in diapers and the recipient of all his father knows and that is about to be added upon with an edmission to North Bennest St School of Furnituremaking, in Boston, MA. 

A business is a toy.  Created to provide purpose, absorption, fascination, and happiness to one's life within a format that rewards its founder with utter control over the accumulating decades, and with a resilience to an ever-changing outlook.

But of course CPW is beyond the scope of any one man.  And although this one man may actually pick up the phone and answer your inquiry personally, or even reply to your emails, the scope of CPW spreads with the ineluctable force of an ever-increasing demand. 

At some juncture, when the waiting schedules for deliveries hovered around two years, CPW began to recruit woodworkers with skills at a level beyond reproach, expanding not only the ability to provide a commission with a reasonable turn-a-round, but enabling a reach beyond the localities of various markets outside the San Francisco bay area.  The production facilities, however, are just that.  Existing for the purpose of hands-on production, with each product created start-to-finish by the workmanship of a single master craftsman.  There are no semi-skilled employees cutting the part lists of an inventory that often defines the production values of an assembly line.

All CPW craftsman undergo a thorough tutorial, familiarizing the distinct and innovative methodologies of all product designs. 

And yet the facilities are not open to the general public.  They are not showrooms.  Interruptions and distractions are exactly what is avoided.  Products are made to order and shipped out or delivered locally upon completion.

Exceptions are made only when a local patron prefers to pick up their completed work at the shop, saving a delivery fee.  CPW will schedule a time and an opportunity to meet and talk with the craftsman responsible for your product.
