The intention with this more elaborate column cap design is to provide a
lighted pattern that is
most appreciated in total darkness. In this setting, we would see only
the lighted grids, and the
pattern of the light-holes within the cap. It makes for a striking
feature, the isolated lighting patterns
illuminating from the landscape in the total darkness of night.
Here,
the diameter light holes on the lower apron and the slotted light holes
on the mid-apron.
Above,
an early version of the two-tiered cap with the light holes as simply
diameters.
A
first look at the column shell, being wheeled out among its smaller
kin.
The
final assembly creates a series of illusions and vanishing perspectives,
by day. By night, an entirely new affect, drawn by the strength
of the lighting designs.
