The Magnalock M62 FG is an alternative electronic closer to the standard automation options. Because it has a return bracket (see below) that engages the magnetic box, it is not advisable for pedestrian gates simply because the return extends approximately 4". The Magnal Lock simply secures the gate closed. It is released by remotes or a release button wired to the column. But it does not automatically open the gate the way standard automation motors do. You must open and close the gate manually. So why bother? Well, there is the security of being able to lock a non-automated driveway gate in the closed position and that is worth something, while being considerably more affordable. The Magnal Lock allows for the normal expansion and contraction from season to season. Gates with standard locksets (such as a residential front door) and an electronically released strike plate require a swing clearance of no more than 1/4". This may work for steel gates or interior doors, but it runs a high risk with exterior gates of the gate swelling to the point it will not close during the wetter months of wood expansion, and the electronic access becomes altogether ineffective. The above plate is surface mounted to either the inside
face of your posts, as illustrated below, or to the inside edge of
a jamb. The
corresponding Z-bar is subsequently mounted to the gate face. M62 F (for wiring through the back into a jamb): $435 ZA62 Bracket (mounting on gate face): $138 ZA62 BK (black anodized) Add 4.5% direct ship Ca patrons add 8.25% sales tax. 1200 lbs test. (M32: 600 lbs Test |

** Having said all the above, there are limitations to the Magnal Lock system that must be addressed. The overhang of the Z-bar is about 4" beyond the edge of the gate, which may, in extreme cases, come into contact with the pedestrian actually entering the gate. The liability of that is what is the issue. The system is better suited for the wider driveway gates usage. Below is a mock-up of exactly how the Magnal Lock congifures to the set-up for double gates, where the right gate is the operable gate and the left gate is fixed in place with a cane bolt. |
