The top arched rails are pencil-scribed from various templates for various size gates, and then cut out on the bandsaw, then smoothed on the top radius with a hand plane.

The underside of the arches, however, are smoothed with a spokeshave.

On the upper left are the collection of spokeshaves, featuring various bevels. On the upper right are the Drawknives, similar to the spokeshaves but capable of removing more wood. The top, uppermost belonged to charles’ step-father, and his father, and his father.
